Who Is Atlas, the Greco-Roman Titan
In Rockefeller Center, in New York City, there is a giant 2-ton statue of Atlas holding the world on his shoulders, made in 1936, by Lee Lawrie and Rene Chambellan. This art deco bronze shows him as he is known from Greek mythology. Atlas is known as the Titan giant whose job is to hold up the world (or heavens). He is not known for his brains, although he almost tricked Hercules into taking over the chore. There is a nearby statue of the Titan Prometheus. Occupation God Family of Atlas Atlas is the son of the Titans Iapetus and Clymene, two of the twelve Titans. In Roman mythology, he had a wife, the nymph Pleione, who bore the 7 Pleiades, Alkyone, Merope, Kelaino, Elektra, Sterope, Taygete, and Maia, and the Hyades, sisters of Hyas, named Phaesyla, Ambrosia, Coronis, Eudora, and Polyxo. Atlas also was sometimes named the father of the Hesperides (Hespere, Erytheis, and Aigle), whose mother was Hesperis. Nyx is another listed parent of the Hesperides. Atlas is a brother of Epimetheus, Prometheus, and Menetius. Atlas as King The career of Atlas included ruling as king of Arcadia. His successor was Deimas, the son of Dardanus of Troy. Atlas and Perseus Perseus asked Atlas for a place to stay, but he refused. In response, Perseus showed the titan the head of Medusa, which turned him to the stone that is now known as Mount Atlas. Titanomachy Since the Titan Cronus was too old, Atlas led the other Titans in their 10-year battle against Zeus, which is called the Titanomachy. After the gods won, Zeus singled Atlas out for punishment, by making him carry the heavens on his shoulders. Most of the Titans were confined to Tartarus. Atlas and Hercules Hercules was sent to get the apple of the Hesperides. Atlas agreed to get the apples if Hercules would hold the heavens for him. Atlas wanted to stick Hercules with the job, but Hercules tricked him into taking back the burden of carrying the heavens on his shoulders. Atlas Shrugged Objectivist philosopher Ayn Rands novel Atlas Shrugged was published in 1957. The title refers to a gesture the Titan Atlas might make were he to try to rid himself of the burden of holding up the heavens.

Julius Caesar on Honour Free Essays
Despite the word ââ¬Ëhonorââ¬â¢ being used frequently in the play, there is little evidence of it actually being demonstrated in the play. Do you agree? In Shakespeareanââ¬â¢ Julius Caesar the idea of honor was a central element to the play. By definition honor involves a sense of self-sacrifice and the quality of knowing and doing something morally right; although this definition was challenged by characters trying to balance personal honor and national honor. We will write a custom essay sample on Julius Caesar on Honour or any similar topic only for you Order Now Many circumstances in the play occurred due to the characters attempting to be honorable and others acting in spite of it. Although the word honor was mentioned numerous times there was little evidence of characters actually displaying this trait. This essay will explore characters that didnââ¬â¢t show honor and had negative traits but also cover the little honor that was shown, by characters such as Brutes. Honor was spoken about more than it was shown but there is still some evidence of honor displayed in this play. Many characters in the play, Julius Caesar, did not show honor towards others in many different situations. There was a large use of the word honor, especially in the scene here Antonym was addressing the audience, but the word was overused and sarcastic. ââ¬Å"For Brutes is an honorable man, So are they all, all honorable menâ⬠(3. 2. 74) Antonym stated that all the conspirators were honorable and by this he was trying to persuade the audience to disagree with this statement. This speech mentioned honor numerous times but there was no sincerity about it being displayed. All the conspirators apparently killed Caesar for all of Rome but we know that especially with Cassias and Case, that they did it not only for Rome but for themselves. L was born free as Caesar; so were you; We both have fed as well, and e can both; Endure the winterââ¬â¢s cold as well as heâ⬠(1. 2. 97) Cassias was Jealous of Careerââ¬â¢s power and therefore the killing of Caesar from the view of Cassias and Case was dishonorable. Also Decides convinced and lied to Caesar about coming to the senate and pl ayed on Caesar weaknesses which was dishonorable. To honor someone in this play sometimes meant that it would be dishonorable to others. This was displayed a lot in the play as characters struggled to choose between personal and national honor. What was right for the city was wrong for Caesar, which is what al the conspirators positions. They had to choose, especially Brutes, to honor their friend or their city. With the influences of Cassias for Brutes the choice was made and it was an honorable act in the eyes of some but obviously the murder of a friend was quite the opposite. This was also a problem with Antonym; ââ¬Å"Careerââ¬â¢s spirit, ranging for revenge, With Ate by his side, come hot from hellâ⬠(3. 1. 270) Antonym needed to honor the memory of his close friend by killing the conspirators. This could be seen as an honorable act because he needed to stand by his friend but it as also a savage act of proclaiming war with many causing numerous deaths, such as Brutes, Tinnitus, Case and many more. Therefore the act of being honorable was diminished as it wasnââ¬â¢t an honorable act to all. Honor was a trait spoken about more than displayed but there was some displays of honorable and righteous actions. Brutes was a very honorable character throughout the whole play and was the only character who stuck by his values. Set honor in one eye and death Iââ¬â¢ the rather die than be dishonorable and throughout the play he displays this many mimes. ââ¬Å"Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more. â⬠(3. 2. 22) He talks about honoring Rome over honoring his friend Caesar. Some may say this is dishonorable but Brutes never had bad intentions and Just wanted what was best for everyone. In Bruteââ¬â¢s speech he wanted to tell the audience what happened ho nestly and he made an effort with Antonym also, although that didnââ¬â¢t end up being a wise decision. Even at the end, when Brutes committed suicide, it was about honor. He did not want to be captured and paraded through his fellow Romans so he had Strata, ââ¬Å"a fellow of a good respectâ⬠, to assist him to kill himself and to calm the ghost of Caesar. From studying many characters in Julius Caesar, it is obvious that honor is a central concept in the play. Although this is the case, having examined the characters and their actions honorable actions are not shown in most situations. While this is the case with the majority of characters, there is the exception of Brutes and some characters who attempt to have good intentions and act honorably. Overall honor is spoken about a lot more then it is displayed. How to cite Julius Caesar on Honour, Papers

Authentic Music free essay sample
The argument concerning whether music can be authentic or inauthentic has been debated for many years. In Ralph Ellisons essay The Charlie Christian Story, he argues that there is true music and imitative music. In his essay he states that, true jazz is an art of individual assertion within and against the group. Although Ellison talks about jazz, I believe that the word Jazz can be replaced with the word music to make the statement more general and explain authenticity in deferent genres of music. For example In rap music there are various examples of authenticity and Imitation. The artist Tuba Shaker and the artist Christopher Wallace, also known as the Notorious B. I. G or Baggy Smalls, are examples of rappers who deliver authentic music. Tuba revolutionized the rap Industry by discussing deeper, more Influential, topics than what many rappers today talk about. One of his most famous songs Changes, which came out In 1 998, after he died, talks mainly about racism and animosity In the world. We will write a custom essay sample on Authentic Music or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page In this song he states that people should start making changes and contribute to making the world a better, more prosperous, place to live in: instead of always being self-centered and driven by hate and greed. The Notorious B. I. G. Not only talked about the problems in the world, but also talked about his life. In his song Juicy, he raps about his life struggle and how he became successful by following his dreams and overcoming the hardships that impeded his path. A more modern example of an authentic rap artist is Curtis 50 Cent Jackson. Fifty, in my opinion, delivers authentic music because his music contains personal experience, much like Tuba and Baggy. He grew up poor, he became a gangster, he went to jail, he dealt with violence, he got shot, and in his music he writes about all of those occurrences. In his first and best album Get Rich or Die Trying he wrote about all of his life events and the path that led him to fame and success. In his song Many Men, which was featured in his first album, he raps about how he was a target for murder and about his experience and recovery of getting shot. Other reasons why I believe that 50 Cents music is authentic, is due to the fact that he does exactly what Ellison says. Fiftys music is art of individual assertion within and against the group. He used ideas from artists such as Tuba and Baggy, added his own flavor and uniqueness and created a sub genre of rap music known today as Gangster Rap. Many others after him have imitated his style of music but have not added their own experience or touch; this Is why much of the music today, In my eyes, is considered to be Inauthentic. There are many artists today who I would consider to be Inauthentic. Soul Boy, R. Kelly, Young Jazzy, Paul Wall, Fat Joe and many more are all examples of artists who create Inauthentic music. Every one of their songs contains scalar lyrics to one another. The songs are either discussing how much money the artist has or how many girls the artist has. There Is no deeper meaning or message that Is being invoked to the listener, unlike lyrics from Tuba, Baggy or Fifty. Inauthentic music Is the bulk of the rap music produced today. Even authentic artists like Tuba, Baggy and Fifty have degraded to lower levels, in order to please the For example one of 50 Cents new songs I Get Money is inauthentic because it only talks about his money and how he spends it. Despite the fact that this song is inauthentic it is still very popular because people enjoy dancing to this song at clubs and parties. This undermines the theory that authenticity is based on popularity.Just cause a song is popular does not mean that it is authentic. Debating whether music can be authentic or imitative, in my opinion, is a valid argument. Most of the popular music today is imitative and, unfortunately, contains no real meaning. However, artists like Tuba, Baggy, and 50 Cent have created opportunity for new aspiring artists to thrive. By accepting the music for what it is, then adding your own originality and experience to it, will you be able to create authentic music. This is why I believe that true music is an art of individual assertion within and against the group.

IT related terms essays A high-level programming language developed by Dennis Ritchie at Bell Labs in the mid 1970s. Although originally designed as a systems programming language, C has proved to be a powerful and flexible language that can be used for a variety of applications, from business programs to engineering. C is a particularly popular language for personal computer programmers because it is relatively small it requires less memory than other languages. The first major program written in C was the UNIX operating system, and for many years C was considered to be inextricably linked with UNIX. Now, however, C is an important language independent of UNIX. Although it is a high-level language, C is much closer to assembly language than are most other high-level languages. This closeness to the underlying machine language allows C programmers to write very efficient code. The low-level nature of C, however, can make the language difficult to use for some types of applications. Concerning the American Language by Mark Twain Essay
Concerning the American Language by Mark Twain - Essay Example Although the history shows that the American language came from the English language, it is still unfair to consider the English language as the correct language and the American language is incorrect. According to the authorââ¬â¢s point of view, there is no point of comparison since American language evolved from English language and developed its own identity as proven by 250 years of existence as the English language spread in the American region. As it spread, the meanings, pronunciation and other words also change. The language evolution was greatly affected by geographical locations and culture of people in certain regions. Despite of the changes in the language, the New England is still somehow heavily influenced by the England itself. The Yankees are the small population about four million people residing in the New York area. This was the region where the Englishmen planted English language in the American region. Although time has passed by, English dictionary like Webst erââ¬â¢s dictionary still calls the language as English language instead of American language. The basis for the language is still English language that causes the dilemma to the identity of the American language which is the very soul of the American people.
